Quick Reference

      Background

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens), the exciting new author whose “Holy Land Excursion, Letter from Mark Twain Number Forty-Eight” had just appeared in the Alta California, arrived in San Francisco on April 2, 1868, to lecture on his Holy Land pilgrimage – and in short order had this formal photograph taken by Bradley & Rulofson of San Francisco.

This lecture tour also took Clemens back to Virginia City – for the very last time: in three weeks he would speak there, on the Holy Land, at Piper’s Opera House.
Signed Photo, being an early Cabinet portrait of the author by Bradley and Rulofson, San Francisco, taken in spring 1868.
