Event: Jewish Soldiers in Civil War Georgia – New Evidence from the Shapell Roster
On October 18, 2026, Shapell Manuscript Foundation Senior Researchers Alexandra Apito and Caitlin Winkler will present new research from the Shapell Roster of Jewish Service in the American Civil War at the Southern Jewish Historical Society’s 50th Anniversary Conference in Atlanta.

Their presentation, “Jewish Soldiers in Civil War Georgia: New Evidence from the Shapell Roster of Jewish Service in the American Civil War,” draws on the Roster’s extensive biographical and military research to shed new light on Jewish soldiers connected to Georgia during the Civil War.
The presentation is part of the Research Workshop on Southern Jewish Family and Local History taking place Sunday afternoon and is co-sponsored by the Shapell Manuscript Foundation. The conference, “The Past, Present, and Future of Southern Jewish History,” will take place October 16–18, 2026, in partnership with Emory University’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies. The conference brings together scholars, researchers, and others working in Southern Jewish history to examine the field’s past, its changing methods, and future directions.
